Our firm has a long and storied history. What we are today and will be in the future is in part due to our collective heritage and reputation built over the years of quality and service to our clients.

Our History
McCloud, Scatchard, Derck, and Edson, the firm was founded on January 1st 1940 by Paul McCloud and William Scatchard, Jr. as McCloud and Scatchard, Landscape Architects. The practice originated at Market Square in Harrisburg, PA focusing mainly on residential, park and housing projects. Paul McCloud was a 1937 graduate of Penn State and a 1938 graduate of Cornell University. William Scatchard graduated from Penn State in 1934. Prior to starting the firm, they both worked through the end of the Depression years with Carl Wild, a professor at Penn State and private practitioner.

McCloud and Scatchard continued in Harrisburg until 1944 when both men accepted U.S. Navy Reserve assignments and served on active duty until 1946.

In late 1946 McCloud and Scatchard reactivated their practice, this time at 33 South Broad Street, Lititz, which remains our location to this day. The firm remained small through the late 40's and into the late 50's focusing on traditional landscape architectural projects.

As the firm's reputation grew and they became reknown for quality design and thorough execution, the staff began to grow. In 1957 Robert Derck joined the firm, and in 1960 Charles Edson also joined the staff. By the mid-1960's the staff had grown to approximately eight (8).

On January 1, 1967, Robert Derck and Charles Edson were named to the Leadership Team and the firm name changed to McCloud, Scatchard, Derck and Edson. In late 1967, Wil Burkhart joined the firm as a staff landscape architect, and in 1972 he was named Associate.

The firm grew throughout the remainder of the 1970's and the range and scope of projects undertaken by the firm also expanded.

William Scatchard, Jr., retired in 1980, and Paul McCloud retired in 1983. By the mid 1980's the total staff had grown to about twelve (12).

In 1984 Robert Kornman joined the firm and Jim Wenger was hired in 1985. Steve Sproles was hired in 1987. Kornman and Wenger became Associates in 1985, and Sproles was named Associate in 1990.

On January 1st 1985, the firm's name was changed to Derck & Edson Associates.

By 1990, the 50th year of the firm's existence, the total staff was approximately twenty-five (25) with the office serving a wide range of clients in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Primary market focus areas include architects, developers, retirement communities, colleges and schools, as well as commercial and residential developments.

Charles Edson retired at the end of 1992 and Robert Derck retired in 1993. Also, in 1993 Robert Kornman and James Wenger were named to the Leadership Team. The firm continued to grow and now has reached thirty (30) as a total complement. In mid 1997, Steve Sproles became a Leadership Team Member.

Our name has again seen some changes in that we are now Derck & Edson Associates, LLP. Having passed 68 years of service Derck & Edson continues to grow and improve while building on its heritage of creative design, strong execution and client satisfaction.
