Barton College Master Plan
Barton College had not had a facilities master plan completed since its opening in 1902. Situated in the center of Wilson, North Carolina, Barton College has unique challenges in its relationship with the surrounding, declining neighborhoods. Working closely with a planning team from the campus as well as City representatives and using GIS crime tracking, we have created a plan that defines the campus boundaries and suggests purchasing key adjacent properties where crime has become a problem.
By acquiring these properties, the College can create new programmatic uses that not only provide services to the student body, but to residents of the surrounding neighborhoods as well. The Barton College Master Plan also suggests the College and the City team together to create a neighborhood improvement zone, making funding available for property clean ups, landscaping, sidewalks, street trees, and other enhancements.
This 20-year master plan has been broken down into four manageable phases, illustrating in simple graphic form how such a significant campus transformation can realistically occur.
