Union Canal Tunnel Park
Lebanon County , Pennsylvania
Designated a National Historic Civil Engineering
Landmark in 1970, this tunnel is the oldest existing transportation
tunnel in the United States. At the time of its construction, it
was considered a work almost unknown in this country.
Our involvement on this site involved the complete restoration of
the existing tunnel portal and restoration of the section of the
existing canal immediately downstream of the tunnel. Working with
the Lebanon County Historical Society, the ultimate project objective
was to create a small recreational park for this area. Working with
the architect and appropriate agencies, a plan was developed to reconstruct
the walls of the canal and transform the area into a Day Use Facility
for visitor use, enjoyment, and education. |
