Except for a few teams, the college football season has drawn to a close. At Upper Iowa University, the memories of this season remain for many reasons, including thoughts of their upgraded complex, made suitable for a NCAA Division II Football program.
Having visited the stadium after the renovations were complete, the changes were amazing ”“ what a transformation! Spectators no longer enter via a gravel road but are now welcomed to a new east-stadium plaza space (complete with barbecue!). As for watching the game, choices now abound from the traditional view from the stands to new dining plazas to ”˜riding the rail’ on the elevated walkway around the stadium which provides good views from most every angle. And there was no lack of entertainment with the new, huge video board in the south end zone.
The feedback about these changes reinforced a fact about modern sports venue design:the spectator experience is a major part of what the facility is all about.
The overall goal for the project was to take a small stadium and imbue it with a big-stadium feel. By all accounts, the goal was met. Way to go Peacocks!
