Hospice Mount Joy
Derck & Edson assisted Hospice of Lancaster County in the master planning, design implementation, and construction of their second facility in Lancaster County. The Hospice Mount Joy facility is located on a 13.5-acre, wooded site in Rapho Township.
Hospice was looking to offer a more rural complement to their existing facility. This new facility houses 24 beds in the single story portion of the structure. The two story portion of the building is the Center for Grief & Loss known as Pathways.
One key site issue during the design process involved Hospice’s desire to preserve the wooded environment and other natural features on the site while accommodating the footprint of the building. Careful planning helped us achieve this goal and orient resident spaces and courtyards to face Chickies Creek and the wooded area. Preserving the natural feel of the site also necessitated careful placement of the building to create separation from the existing development surrounding Hospice.
The walkways that wind throughout the site take advantage of the views and natural landscape as well as provide the potential for an extension of the successful Walk of Remembrance program already established at the first Hospice facility.
