Stevens Institute of Technology 9th Street Corridor
To increase connectivity and pedestrian safety between the primary campus entrance and key destinations within, Derck & Edson designed a walkway into the heart of campus. The new pedestrian corridor loosely follows Babbio Drive, Stevens’s main roadway, and connects the campus gateway to the shuttle drop-off loop and primary buildings at the campus core.
The pathway is compliant with all ADA regulations and is pleasantly meandering to maintain an accessible grade while remaining mindful of mature trees nearby. Decorative unit pavers were utilized as the primary material to provide additional visual interest to the walking surface. New flowering, ornamental trees have been added along the path to offset the loss of other trees from construction projects across campus. Additional landscape plantings and site lighting will provide extra visual interest in the spring and safer walking conditions in the evening. This new corridor is designed to be a functional and attractive addition to Stevens’s campus.
