Juniata College Storm Water Planning
As a result of planned campus development, a storm water master plan for the campus was proposed. The plan would transform an impaired stream and associated floodplain on the campus. The floodplain was unusable space because of regulations preventing development within the floodplain. Derck & Edson took an innovative approach and proposed the construction of a riparian buffer adjacent to the stream which will provide water quality benefits as well as runoff volume reduction. Strategic plant selections for the riparian buffer will also serve to beautify an area of the campus that is currently an afterthought. Approval for the use of the riparian buffer as a storm water management BMP for the campus required several meetings and educational sessions with DEP, the local conservation district, local planning committees, and the Huntingdon Borough Council.
