Virginia Wesleyan University Master Plan
Looking for a national planning and design firm who specializes in liberal arts institutions to create a comprehensive campus master plan, Virginia Wesleyan University turned to Derck & Edson to cast a vision based on their recently completed strategic plan.
In conjunction with Aramark and Comprehensive Facilities Planning, an enormous amount of data was collected (parking study, space study, and a facilities condition assessment) in order to inform the ultimate facilities master plan. Elements that needed to be included in the future planning of the institution in Virginia include expanded athletic facilities, a prioritized approach to campus housing improvements, more outdoor gathering spaces, planning for a new fine arts building, as well as expanding residence hall offerings.
An interactive planning process resulted in a four phase plan that creates a logical step-by-step approach to annual campus improvements over the next 15 years. The plan is being used to not only budget for these improvements but as a tool to assist in the fundraising necessary for many of the projects.
