Allegheny College Landscape Master Plan
Allegheny College is located in a region where low temperatures and winter weather dominate during the spring and fall semesters. In addition, maintenance costs were a concern on the 40-acre core campus.
The landscape master plan was developed to increase sustainability on campus and create seasonal interest, even during off-peak growing times.
Sustainability was addressed by developing a plan for the campus that requires less mowing, heavy equipment, and maintenance. The overall campus aesthetic was improved by focusing on existing features, sustainable practices, and native plantings. Areas requiring a lot of maintenance are only designed for high profile sections of campus where the added work is justified and will be showcased.
The landscape master plan document was produced in both a long form for detailed reference and in a quick guide format. Each quick guide focuses on a specific strategy and highlights day-to-day, useful tools for facilities staff to ensure that the vision of the overall master plan is taken into the field on a daily basis.
