Eastern Market Plaza
Winner of a recently announced 2012 Envision Smart Growth Award, the Eastern Market Plaza project enhanced the streetscape and plaza area at the Tabor Building and Eastern Market in Lancaster. The plaza renovation was part of a larger project that also improved the Eastern Market building with exterior painting, roof and window replacement, new gutters, and masonry repair.
The design of Eastern Market Center provides a simple brick and concrete plaza with a small cluster of Honey Locust trees providing shade for the patrons and vendors of the market.
What is not immediately visible is the transformative impact of this plaza. The sculpture and bricks now occupy a space which was formerly a public street which cut directly in front of the historic building and created a dangerous five-point intersection. With the street vacated and traffic reconfigured, the space is now safe, comfortable, and a much deserved elegant forecourt for the City’s only Second Empire market house.
