Penn State University Deike Building – State College, PA

Penn State University Deike Building

At University Park, an existing concrete entry was scheduled to be renovated, creating a more open air entry for two key campus buildings. Derck & Edson was contracted to work through the design process with key stakeholders to develop a design for the new entry. Goals for the new space included:

  • new, more inviting entry way to the building
  • ADA accessibility
  • coordination with a new doorway/wall system
  • opportunity for donor involvement and the related, high-level of finish
  • responsiveness to the short time line for project completion
  • incorporation of bike racks, new lighting, and utility upgrades/site furnishings
  • solving drainage issues

Derck & Edson addressed all these issues through our project process. Final deliverables included:

  • design development
  • construction documents (including an existing conditions plan, layout plan, grading and utility plan/profiles, site construction details, landscape plan, and technical specifications)
  • design meetings
  • construction observation

The resulting space is a comfortable, accessible niche with unique characteristics that create an inviting space and memorable addition to the campus.
