Penn State University Celebration Garden
The class of 2007 wanted to make a positive and lasting impression on the PSU University Park campus. Their desire was to enhance the entry to Rec Hall, a much-visited and central campus site. Their goal was stated as:
“The goal of the 2007 Senior Class Gift, the Celebration Garden at Rec Hall, is to improve the area in front of Rec Hall through beautification and enhancement of aesthetics. Main goals are: respecting the integrity of the building as well as the Lion Shrine area, providing seating, and decreasing the amount of concrete through the addition of green space. The area should be inviting, memorable, and be conducive to the celebration of the past, present and future of the building.”
Derck & Edson was contracted to help bring their vision to reality through the development of a plan and construction documents.
The plan fulfills the vision with a solution that is simple, creative, and long lasting. The Celebration Garden showcases Rec Hall as a significant structure on campus. The incorporation of classic hardscape materials with the landscape creates the desired aesthetic. Various opportunities for seating and gathering make this a welcome and inviting space.
