University of Scranton Quinn Athletics Complex
At University of Scranton, campus athletics had been located at multiple, off-campus locations. The University engaged Derck & Edson to work with them to design and plan for unifying and transforming the University’s athletic facilities. Feasibility studies were completed that considered multiple sites, multiple concepts and plan options, and related pricing.
The University needed to accommodate baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse programs. Key planning considerations included natural or artificial turf surface selections, field orientation for sun angles, spectator areas and gateways, accessory structures (bull pens, practice areas), all in accordance with NCAA regulations and guidelines for intercollegiate competition.
Once the final site and program were selected, a 3D model was created to help stakeholders better visualize the proposed design. The final design includes fields that are fully lighted, structured facilities for spectators, training rooms, and team rooms, and all synthetic turf surfaces.
Derck & Edson served as the prime design consultant for the project from feasibility through construction administration, led the multi-disciplinary design team, and secured governmental approvals, including permits for development along the Lackawanna River.
Construction was completed in the spring of 2018 with the complex named in honor of the University’s president, the Reverend Kevin P. Quinn, S.J.
