Panther Stadium
In 2006, the president of Birmingham-Southern College made a drastic change to their athletics program going from NCAA Division I to Division III. This led to the addition of football, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track. Since these sports did not previously exist on campus, new facilities needed to be built quickly.
Derck & Edson created a long-term athletics master plan as well as a 3D model. The master plan contained provisions for a new synthetic turf multi-sport field surrounded by an 8-lane polyurethane track (including steeplechase, long/triple jump pits, high jump, and pole vault), a natural turf practice football field, discus and shot-put throwing cages, a javelin runway, and natural turf soccer field. The location of the facilities took advantage of a section of campus that is in close proximity to BSC’s existing softball stadium and tennis complex.
Panther Stadium is an impressive addition to the campus of Birmingham-Southern College. The students, athletes, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and Birmingham community have a wonderful facility to visit throughout the year. Athletics and recreation at BSC changed significantly with this facility.
